Article: Another Animal Dead at SeaWorld
Author: Lindsay Pollard-Post
"An African crowned crane died at SeaWorld San Diego last weekend after being locked in a cage that was left just inches away from a dolphin pool. According to reports, the bird rocked the cage, fell into the pool, and drowned. An anonymous SeaWorld employee leaked the story to the news. SeaWorld officials said that the incident wasn't something that the company would normally release to the media. It makes you wonder what else they've swept under the rug."

MY TAKE:

Animal cruelty is far too prevalent in today's society. In this article, an African crane drowned at SeaWorld because it's cage was left too close to a pool, which it fell into. While this story may not be direct animal cruelty, it is definitely a case of careless behavior towards an animal.

It's unfortunate because despite the fact that we are an incredibly advanced society, there is still far too much animal cruelty going on in this world. The number one example is the fur industry. Animals on fur farms are raised to die, so that their pelts can be used in fashion, mainly. Extremely inhumane methods of killing are used on these animals, including poison gas, injections, and neck breaking. In our world, innocent animals are killed just so that people can be fashionable.

It truly is a shame.

Article: Bullet Proof Cotton Tees
Author: BangaloreMirror.com
Date Posted: April 12, 2010

My Summary:
Researchers at the University of South Carolina working with scientists from China and Switzerland have created an ultra hard tee shirt by combining the carbon in the shirt's cotton with the third hardest substance on Earth--boron. This amazing advance in technology could lead to the creation of an ultra light bullet proof cotton tee shirt.
Cotton has become one of the the most important fabrics in fashion. When the "cotton picker" was created in the 1930's, it made cotton much more accessible, which lead to the very widespread use in fashion. In our time, almost everyone has clothing made with cotton, it is an absolute staple in society.

Article: To Save a Snow Leopard: A Special Afghanistan Mission
Author: By: Tim McGerk
On March 17th, 2010

My Summary:

The article describes a hunter in a valley in the Wakhan Mountains of Afghanistan who caught an extremely rare snow leopard, which is an endangered species with a total of less than a 1,000 left on the planet. The snow leopard was thought to be entirely extinct in Afghanistan. The capturer brought the snow leopard alive back into town and allegedly tried to sell it for $2,000,000. Luckily, The US Agricultural department in northern Afghanistan was tipped off about the leopard and confiscated it from the hunters.

This story capitalizes on the extremely high demand for the almost extinct leopard. In the past 100 years, the popularity of the leopard has grown sky high, particularly in fashion. Jackie Kennedy started the huge trend of leopard jackets when her husband was in office. She had a personal designer who's name was Oleg Cassini, the designer of the infamous leopard jacket, which sparked a fashion craze for women. Since Jackie was a major style icon, leopard fur became high in demand and over 250,000 leopards were killed as women made got their copies of Jackie's coat made. Fortunately, after Cassini realized his creation was leading to the extinction of a species he made an effort to persuade women to wear faux fur, and not real fur, which ultimately lead to it being more fashionable to wear faux fur.

Ann Demeulemeester used dark colors and various textures & fabrics in her men's Fall/Winter 2010 collection. The garments all feature a somewhat draped style, something i particularly liked, including the differences of sheen seen on the garments.
